PSHE
PSHE is the acronym for Personal, Social, Health and Emotional Education.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
At Jubilee Primary School, we believe that children flourish when they feel safe, valued, respected and empowered. PSHE is at the heart of our curriculum and plays a vital role in helping pupils develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead healthy, happy and successful lives.
As a school, we place children at the centre of everything we do and are committed to nurturing confident, creative, caring and responsible young people. Our PSHE curriculum supports this vision by helping children develop positive relationships, understand themselves and others, celebrate diversity, manage challenges and make informed choices about their wellbeing and future. These values reflect our commitment to developing the children’s character and caring for one another within our diverse school community.
Our PSHE Curriculum
At Jubilee Primary School, we use Jigsaw PSHE, a comprehensive and progressive programme that supports children’s personal, social, emotional and mental health development from Nursery to Year 6.
Jigsaw brings together PSHE, emotional literacy, social skills, mindfulness, relationships education and health education in a coherent and engaging curriculum. Lessons provide opportunities for discussion, reflection and collaborative learning, helping children build confidence, resilience and empathy.
The Jigsaw curriculum is organised into six half-termly themes:
- Being Me in My World
Developing a sense of belonging, responsibility and citizenship. - Celebrating Difference
Promoting respect, equality, inclusion and understanding of diversity. - Dreams and Goals
Encouraging aspiration, perseverance and achievement. - Healthy Me
Supporting physical health, emotional wellbeing and healthy lifestyles. - Relationships
Helping children build positive, respectful and healthy relationships. - Changing Me
Supporting personal growth, development and understanding of change.
How PSHE Links to Our Vision and Values
Jubilee Primary School is a vibrant and diverse community where children are encouraged to develop academically, creatively and socially. Our PSHE curriculum supports this vision by helping pupils become:
Confident Individuals
Children learn to recognise their strengths, express their feelings appropriately, build resilience and develop a positive sense of self-worth.
Caring and Respectful Citizens
Through learning about relationships, diversity and inclusion, pupils develop empathy, kindness and respect for others. They learn to value different perspectives and contribute positively to our school and wider community.
Healthy and Safe Learners
Children gain the knowledge and skills they need to make safe and healthy choices, understand risk, manage emotions and seek support when needed.
Responsible Members of the Community
PSHE encourages pupils to understand their rights and responsibilities, develop a sense of belonging and appreciate the importance of contributing to a positive and inclusive society.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
At Jubilee, we recognise that emotional wellbeing is fundamental to successful learning. Jigsaw’s mindfulness approach helps children develop self-awareness, emotional regulation and coping strategies, supporting positive mental health across the school.
Through regular PSHE lessons, circle discussions and wider wellbeing initiatives, pupils learn that it is okay to talk about their feelings and seek help when they need it.
Relationships and Health Education
Relationships and Health Education is taught through our Jigsaw PSHE programme in line with statutory government guidance (see mapping document below for more details). Children learn age-appropriate knowledge about:
- Families and caring relationships
- Friendships and respectful behaviour
- Online safety
- Physical and mental wellbeing
- Keeping safe
- Personal development and growing up
Our aim is to ensure that all children are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to develop healthy relationships and make informed decisions throughout their lives.
